Product Description

Adding Gum Arabic to a Watercolour wash will have the following effects:

it will slow the drying time of your paint, giving you slightly longer to work on creating your image or working wet into wet
it increases transparency and gloss to give greater brilliance of colour, giving you luminous colours
it reduces the staining of pigments, making washes easier to lift

How is it used?

Gum Arabic is usually mixed into the Watercolour wash but can be added to the jar of water if you prefer to use it throughout the painting. Gum Arabic should not be used directly from the bottle because thick films will be brittle

  1. A Best Kept Secret

Posted by Ben Haslam on 19th Aug 2010

Winsor & Newtons Gum Arabic is so pure and clean and has to be one of the best available.
Here is a fantastic technique for painting a flowered shrub.
1)Make a green wash perhaps using Raw Umber and Viridian and water.
    2) Add several drops of Gum.
    3) Stir.
4)Now paint the shape of the shrub and it's foliage but don't include the flowers just be free to paint over them with the green.
    5) Dry off

6)Now use only water with a brush to paint the flowers, shapes and patterns . Allow little puddles to settle for 30 seconds.
7)Now Blot out the wet flower patterns with Blotting paper.

.HEY PRESTO White flower shapes !!
now colour them as you like.

Just one of many techniques that Gum is great for
